Once abundant, the Monarchs are facing a dire future. The population in 2018 crashed from over 4 million butterflies to what they think is 28,000. That’s a 98% decrease. And in the state of Utah, we unfortunately don’t know anything about our Monarch Butterflies. Vernal, Utah, in 2017, a few Uinta Basin locals got together with the initial intention of discussing Sandhill Cranes. The conversation soon turned to butterflies and that was the moment the “Uintah Basin Birds and Butterflies” group was formed; a group dedicated to creating fun activities that teach us about the role of pollinators in the environment.
